‘Altogether Lovely’

The Lord Jesus Christ is to His people ‘altogether lovely’. The Bride of Christ delights in every feature of her Betrothed, every aspect of His character, every accomplishment of His hand. And the more we know of Jesus our Saviour and Friend, the more we love Him. 

The Lord revealed Himself to the church in the Old Testament through visitations, prophecies, types and symbols. There was no lack of true, spiritual affection amongst those who obeyed God’s command to, ‘love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might’. 

Solomon’s Song is a beautiful love story. It fulness unfolds when Christ and His Bride are viewed in the persons of the King and His Shulamite. It is she who describes her betrothed as ‘altogether lovely’. She gifts the church of all ages a succession of qualities that typify the glory and beauty of our Saviour.

Our Beloved is white and ruddy; spotless, pure and holy in His divine nature and ruddy, or red, in His human nature, as Adam took his name from the red earth. He is chiefest to His Father and choicest among men having been exalted amongst His brethren. 

The head of our Saviour is as the most fine gold, as He is Head over His church. The locks of His hair are bushy and black and the members of His body are a great number of redeemed sinners that no man can number. 

Christ’s eyes are alert to see, yet gentle as the keen eyes of prized doves. His gaze is always upon His people; seeing all things, knowing all things and dealing fitly with His church as their needs require. 

His cheeks are as a bed of spices: His lips like lilies. So, too, the words that fell from the Master’s lips in His earthly offices are sweet-scented and spicey, rich and wholesome, to comfort and nourish His people in this wilderness world.

Christ’s hands are as gold rings for their bounty and provision. He cares for those He loves. He provides for all our needs. His belly conveys His tender, loving care, His feeling for our infirmities, His union in our troubles.

His legs are pillars of marble in sockets of gold. He has power to save with divine grace, power to deliver with awesome strength, He smiles with compassion upon His dearly beloved.

His mouth is sweet with gospel truth and God’s message of saving grace. His sweet kisses invigorate our souls. From His head to His feet He is altogether lovely.

Such it the testimony of the church on earth concerning her Beloved. He has given us a message to declare to the world concerning His comeliness and the wonder of His ways. ‘This is my beloved, and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem.’
